Market The Brew

The Market The Brew podcast was created for people with a passion for craft beer that want ideas, inspiration, and resources for taking craft beer(s) to market. Specifically, brewery owners; brewery marketing staff; sales/distribution people; and marketing service providers with a focus on the craft beer industry. This is a weekly exploration of the marketing of craft beer. Our conversations include reviewing actual case histories of most unique, exciting and effective strategies, campaigns, and promotions. Digging into how problem or opportunity was identified; what was the thinking/idea and where did it come from. What worked and didn’t work. And, the results produced in the marketplace. Our vision is that Market The Brew will be a source of ideas, inspiration, and marketing resources.

I met Sean Sullivan at the 2017 Craft Brewers Conference in DC. During our conversation, he described to me a promotion that he is spearheading which I can tell you is the most ingenious and creative of its type that I’ve come across.

He has lectured internationally on sustainable surfboards, worked in product design for an outdoors retailer, and co-founded a ‘buy local’ gift card company, which he sold to one of Maine’s biggest banks in 2016.

The organization for which he is the executive director focused on two strategic goals:

First, Make Maine the #1 destination in the USA for craft beer tourists,

And Second, make Maine’s craft beer industry a model industry for Maine’s next economy.

With us today is one of the original co-founders of Untappd. He is a SoCal native. While pondering potential app ideas, he stumbled upon the concept behind Untappd. The idea - a melding of mobile technology, social sharing, and a recently discovered love for all things beer. Having majored in graphic design at Brooks Institute and having worked with many high profile clients, he set about creating the front end of what would eventually become Untappd. Currently, Tim Mather is leading product at Untappd as Chief Product Officer.

Our guest today is Mike Brenner of Brenner Brewing.

Mike's passion for homebrewing & lifelong devotion to the Milwaukee arts scene led to the creation of a one-of-a-kind brewery. What makes it one of a kind is that Mike takes crafting high quality beers as seriously as he takes supporting the local community.

In 2014, with a diploma in Master Brewing, Mike opened the first new brewery in Milwaukee in seventeen years.

The brewery’s tasting room features his unique brews and several other Wisconsin favorites. Plenty of outdoor seating, twenty-one attached art studios, and two art galleries make for a one of a kind experience.
